January 11, 2016 DIY FYI: Safety Tip When Installing a New Toilet
Installing a new toilet is actually a simpler task than you might imagine. We show you everything you need to know in our how-to video, How to Install a New Toilet.
There is one important safety consideration to be aware of when doing this project, however. When you remove the old toilet to clean up around the area and prepare the flange for the installation, the sewer line will be exposed. This presents the possibility that dangerous sewer gasses can enter your home while you are working on the area.
So how do you prevent this from happening? You should simply stuff an old rag into the opening, while you are cleaning up the old wax ring and working on the flange.
There is one important thing, though…Just don’t forget to remove the rag before you install the new toilet! The last thing you want to do is to have to remove the new toilet that you just installed, to remove the rag.
