November 19, 2015  Easy Tips to Prepare Your Entry for Winter

Winter is right around the corner, and along with it, the winter holidays will likely bring more people through your front door. So now is a great time to make sure that the entry to your home is safe, organized and attractive.

Here are some quick and easy tips to prepare your entryway for the season:

Outside the House

  • Install an absorbent doormat and a boot scraper at the entryway
  • Be sure to spread sand or salt on all wet and icy exterior surfaces, especially stairs, paved paths and and sidewalks
  • Replace burned-out bulbs in outdoor light fixtures, and install new lights in strategic areas along paths and walkways.  The easiest lights of all to install are the solar powered garden lights, that you stick in the ground and that get re-charged by sunlight.

Inside the House

  • It is a good idea to install a second mat inside the door, for extra protection from mud and moisture.
  • If you don’t have a designated mudroom, install an attractive coat rack in your entryway, along with shelves or baskets for shoes and boots.  Consider placing a basket of cozy socks or inexpensive slippers inside the door, for people to slip on when they remove their shoes.
  • We all know how clutter can accumulate around the entryway to our homes.  So it’s a good idea to donate or discard extra winter coats and mittens, scarves and hats that are no longer worn by your family members.
