Carpentry Trick: Use a Level to Determine an Angle Without Measuring
Watch this video to learn how to determine an angle, using a standard professional level. In the video, Leah shows this technique while doing the job of replacing a 4×4 porch post that needs to be set on an angled surface.
There are two different ways to accomplish finding the angle:
- Use the level to find plumb. Then “eyeball” the angle when you are setting the miter saw. This is the “no measuring” technique.
- Use a level to find plumb. Then use a speed square to determine the angle.
Either method will work to correctly determine the angle of the cut. However, if you don’t happen to have a speed square on hand, there is no need to buy one to find the angle.
