fit tile around door

Here at See Jane Drill, we absolutely adore slate tile flooring.  In fact, we like it so much that we put together an entire (free!) series of how-to videos and accompanying written instructions on how to install it in your own home!  (See below for links)

In any case, installing a slate tile floor is definitely a DIY project that anyone with some basic training can easily accomplish themselves.  Now, here are the reasons why we think you should consider installing slate tile in your next kitchen, bathroom, mud room, or really any room where you are planning to replace your flooring:

1.   Slate Tile is Beautiful!  Slate is what is called a “metamorphic” rock, which basically means that it is formed by another type of rock that is exposed to compression and high heat over a long period of time.  Slate occurs in a wide range of colors, such as blue, purple, orange, brick-red, green, and grey.  Every floor (indeed, every tile) is unique.  Slate tile flooring will give a natural warmth to any room in which it is installed.

2.  It is slip-resistant, stain-resistant and fire-resistant.  One of the best features of slate tile is that it is slip-resistant, even when wet (a nice asset for both the bathroom and kitchen!).  It is also quite durable, and naturally stain resistant.  And unlike wood flooring, slate is fire-resistant, which offers an added safety feature to your home.

3.  It is low-maintenance.  All that is required to maintain slate tile (if properly installed) is an occasional mopping with a mild detergent.  If you choose to seal your slate your slate tile floor (it isn’t necessary to seal), stick with a water-based polyurethane, and you will most likely need to re-seal it annually.

4.  It is durable.  Slate tile is very durable, which is a huge benefit for high traffic areas of the home, and/or for homes where multiple children and pets reside!

5. It is relatively easy to install, and there is room for creativity and a wide margin for error.  Again, with some basic training and the proper tools, just about anyone can install their own slate tile floor.  Every tile is different, which allows you to put the ones you like best in the most visible areas of the room.  And, you don’t have to follow any particular pattern (as in fact would be impossible to do so), so there is a wide margin for error.

Give slate tile flooring a try…you just might love it!
