Cutting and Assembling PVC Pipe and CPVC Pipe.
A step-by-step how-to guide on how to cut and assemble PVC and CPVC pipe. (Accompanies the video “Beginner Tutorial Cut and Assemble PVC Pipe” )
Here are two different ways to cut PVC pipe.
Method 1 is the traditional, old-fashioned way. Method 2 utilizes a more modern tool. We also show how to attach pieces of PVC pipe together.
Cutting Method 1: Use a Hacksaw
- Don safety glasses
- Secure the PVC pipe in a vise
- Saw through it with the hacksaw
Cutting Method 2: Use a Ratcheting PVC Cutter
- Don safety glasses
- Line up the cutting blade on the ratcheting cutter with your mark
- Squeeze the cutter several times with the ratcheting action until the pipe is securely lodged in the cutter
- Squeeze 3 to 4 more times firmly until you cut through the pipe.
The downside to the hacksaw method is that it takes longer, and the cut will be more ragged-looking. If you use the ratcheting PVC cutter, it will be quick, and the cut will be nice and smooth. So, the ratcheting cutter method is preferred, however, you can use the hacksaw if that is what you have.
Attaching PVC Pipe
- Don your safety glasses, as well as some gloves
- Cut the pieces of pipe to the length that you will need
- You will then need a union to join the pieces of pipe together
- First, apply primer to the outside of the pieces of pipe that you want to join together
- Next, apply primer to the inside of the union
- Next, apply PVC cement to the outside of the pipe.
- Insert the pipe into the union. Twist to secure, and then hold it for 30 seconds.
Note: You can use this same technique to join together CPVC pipe. You will just need to make sure you have the correct primer and cement for CPVC pipe.
