June 24, 2015 Using Molasses to Remove Rust
Did you know that ordinary molasses makes a great rust remover? Best yet, you can remove rust from iron pans, parts, and tools without using any caustic chemicals!
With a molasses rust remover, all you need is time and a little patience. Make a solution of 1 part molasses to 9 or 10 parts warm water. Completely submerge the item that you would like to remove the rust from in the solution. It is important that it be completely submerged.
Then, you wait. It can take anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks to remove the rust. We suggest starting with 1 week, and then checking. Resist the temptation to pull the item out of the solution and check every day or two!
Once you remove the item from the molasses solution, any remaining rust can be scrubbed off easily with a wire brush. Rinse and dry thoroughly, and you should be good to go!
