Cutting Off Power at the Breaker Panel
Leah,
What is the purpose of connecting the ground wire when installing a new light fixture rather than leaving it disconnected? I mean, you are actually installing the light fixture onto the mounting bracket so wouldn’t that be a good enough ground? I find all your videos very informative and appreciate all that you do for us do-it-yourselfers. Thank you
Okay, let’s say for example the “ hot” wire on a light fixture somehow breaks or becomes disconnected and touches the metal box or metal of the fixture. With no ground wire attached, that fixture is now energized, and if someone were to make contact with it, they would risk shock or electrocution. In addition to that, a short can generate enough heat to start a fire. What a ground wire does (and not the mounting bracket) is that in the event of a short, it provides a path for current to travel safely, causing the fuse to blow or breaker to trip, which stops the flow of electricity.
thanks to this website and especially to this very informative video I was able to switch out my outdated entryway light all on my own. This will now be the first place I go to for diy help. Thank you!!
you’re very welcome, Jessica, and congrats on doing it yourself! 🙂
