June 16, 2015 How to Caulk When There is a Large Gap Present
We recently received a question from one of our viewers, and it went something like this:
“Do you have any advice on how to caulk where the tub meets the floor? I have a very wide gap there.”
Here is the answer:
It depends upon how large the gap is. Gaps up to 1/4″ inch in size can be caulked in the usual manner, without any concerns. If the gap is larger than a 1/4″, you will want to install a foam backer rod into the joint, prior to caulking. The foam backer rod is also a good idea if the gap is particularly deep.
Foam backer rod can be purchased for under $5 from many hardware and home improvement stores.

What about if the gap is from a vanity top and where it meets the wall on one side? Mine is a larger than a 1/4 inch but is flush on the back. Would you use the same foam for that or do you recommend something else?
Also thank you for the instructions and the tutorials. I have been able to tackle some issues by myself instead of always having to hire someone to do it for me. Thank you for that.
Hi Lisa, Sure, you can use that same backer rod material for this application. Glad to be of help, and that you are saving money!!
