July 6, 2015 How a P Trap in Your Sink Works
Perhaps you may have wondered why the pipe underneath your kitchen or bathroom sink has a bend in it. The bent section is called the P Trap.
There is a reason why the pipe is this shape, and believe it or not, the main reason is for your safety! The bend in the pipe catches water, and the water creates a barrier. This barrier prevents dangerous sewer gases from entering your home. Another function is that the P trap catches debris, to keep it from creating a clog in the pipe.

This picture shows an S trap. I needed to know if there is a recommended depth for a P-trap. This does not help.
