Spring is finally here. Many of us look forward to putting the snow shovel up and pulling down the garden shovel. It’s the perfect time to plant flower beds and flower boxes.

Maybe you’re considering planting both annuals and perennials this spring, or perhaps tomato and herb gardening is your thing. No matter what your gardening passion, you can give your garden a fresh look this spring by giving tired clay flower pots, weathered plastic urns, and faded wooden flower boxes a new life with a quick inexpensive face-lift.

Here’s how:

1. Thoroughly clean the containers you’ll be using for spring planting. Armed with a little elbow grease and a stiff bristle brush, knock away any loose dirt and/or mineral deposits. Once the inside and the outside of the pots and containers are free of muck…
2. Submerge the containers in a solution of 9 parts water to 1 part bleach for 10 minutes. Then rinse them and allow them to air dry. The bleach and water bath will help to eliminate any unhealthy organism. Note: Terracotta pots will need an additional soaking in plain water for 10 minutes to remove and neutralize any residual bleach which may have been absorbed into the clay’s pores. Then allow them to air dry as well.

3. Once the the containers are clean and completely dry, they will be ready for their fresh new look. And what could be easier and an more inexpensive than to renew your flower pots but with a coat of paint?  Be fearless. There is a plethora of spray paint colors and textures to choose from. Perhaps a fluorescent orange will make your garden pop, or maybe you prefer  the shine of a chrome metallic look. Or perhaps an understated slate black matte is what you prefer. No matter what your taste in color or patina, there is a paint that can give your flower pots a much needed face-lift, and your garden an unexpected POP!
