There is so much to do when preparing a house for sale, that sometimes the easiest DIY projects that provide the best bang for your buck fall by the wayside. Or, you end up paying someone else too much money to do them. Such is the case with cleaning windows. The thing is, this is one task that most realtors will recommend doing, but not everyone does it.
Fortunately, cleaning windows is not a difficult job at all, so you can sell your house with clean, sparkling windows that tell a potential buyer that your home is loved and cared for. And do it yourself for a little bit of nothing, saving hundreds of dollars! That’s right, with about $30 worth of materials, including a professional grade squeegee, you can achieve gorgeous, professional-looking results. Just follow these steps (also shown in our video Washing Windows Clean with Streak-Free Results)
Tools & Materials Needed
- Professional-Grade Brass Squeegee (Available from professional window-cleaning stores or on the internet, this is a must-have. An important thing to remember is that success in window cleaning is about 10% technique and 90% the quality of the tool! And it doesn’t cost much more than a typical squeegee)
- 5-gallon bucket with clean, cool water
- Ammonia
- White vinegar
- Large sponge (a natural sea sponge is best) and/or
- Fiber mop (optional, good for large windows that you might not be able to reach with the sponge)
- Extension pole (optional)
1. Mix the ammonia and white vinegar into the water to make your cleaning solution. The proportions are 1/2 cup ammonia and 1/2 cup white vinegar to each gallon of water.
2. Apply the solution to the window with your fiber mop or your sponge. Make sure you loosen up any dirt particles as you go.
3. Squeegee the window from top to bottom. The most important thing to remember is to wipe your squeegee dry in between passes, so that you are always using a dry squeegee. Overlap your passes, so that the end of the squeegee is running along the dry window from the previous pass.
And that is it! This is an easy DIY job, and is all takes to clean your own windows with professional-results, show off your house to its best advantage, and sell your house!
