Attaching Baseboards, Crown Molding with a Scarf Joint. Here is a nifty trick for how you can install long runs of baseboards, crown molding and chair rail in a large room, with nearly invisible seams! Molding doesn’t usually come in lengths longer than 12 feet (3.66m). However, there will be times when you have a larger room, such as a dining room or living room with longer dimensions, and you will need to attach 2 pieces of molding. If you were to just butt the 2 pieces up against each other, the joint would have a slight gap that would be clearly visible to the eye. This problem can be easily corrected, however, by simply making the right type of cut.
This is wear the scarf joint comes in. The scarf joint is basically a cut that allows the 2 pieces of molding to fit together nearly perfectly, thus avoiding the visible gap, creating a nearly invisible seam, and giving your molding job a very professional appearance! It is very simple to do, once you know the technique, and we show you exactly how to do it in our how-to video “Joining Baseboards, Chair Rail and Crown Molding with a Scarf Joint”.
