Why should you rotate your car tires? Is it really necessary? Well, yes, it is. Tire rotation, if done regularly, will maximize the life of your tires. This includes all-wheel-drive vehicles.
The reason is that tires tend to wear unevenly. Some of the factors may include the position of the vehicle, the condition of your suspension, and your driving style. Generally speaking, the edges of front tires tend to wear down more quickly, because the tire leans over when you turn a corner.
Rotating the car’s tires will help to evenly distribute tire wear, which ultimately helps you to to get the most miles out of your tires. If you don’t rotate the car’s tires, you’ll have to replace the tires literally thousands of miles sooner.
So, doing this maintenance of regularly rotating your tires can save you hundreds of dollars in premature tire replacement! And it even helps to improve your gas mileage.
How often should you have your car’s tires rotated? Goodyear recommends you get your tires rotated every 3,000 mi-6,000 mi (5,000 km-10,000 km), as part of your overall routine for car maintenance.
One caveat, however, is that you should not pay more than about $20 for car tire rotation, to maximize your overall savings. One way to keep down the cost of rotating your car’s tires is to ask your mechanic to rotate the tires when they are already doing another service on your car. You may not even have to pay any extra for the service. Or, if you have a jack and are so inclined, you can rotate the tires yourself.
In any case, this quick, easy and inexpensive task can save you money in the long run, so you should definitely add it to your car maintenance list!
