How to Use a Japanese Saw

To learn how to use a woodworking tool that has been around for ages, watch this video tutorial on to how to use a Japanese saw.  The Japanese saw is a great tool to have in your DIY toolbox, particularly if you are interested in fine woodworking.

We provide an overview of the saw and how it works, as well as some tips on how to successfully use a Japanese saw to cut wood.  It provides incredible accuracy and precision, with very little strength needed to actually operate the saw.

The Japanese saw comes in a variety of sizes and types, however, the most popular version and the one we show in the video is called a ryobi.  The ryobi has cutting teeth on both sides of the saw blade.  One set of teeth is larger, and is used for ripping wood (cutting with the grain).  The other set of teeth is smaller and more fine, and is used when you want to do cross-cutting (cutting against the grain of the wood).  You can get a nice quality Japanese saw for about $35.

Try it out, and you might find yourself using one all the time when you’re doing DIY woodworking projects!
