Why It is Important to Sweep Your Chimney. If chestnuts roasting on an open fire is in your future in the coming winter months, then, tis the season to have your chimney swept. Even though the weather may still be pleasant, early autumn is the perfect time of year to have your chimney inspected and cleaned, especially if you intend on using yours this winter or during the holiday season. Doing it now makes the chimney safe and accessible, without the hazard of frost or snow on the roof. Here’s why cleaning and servicing your chimney is important:

· Avoiding Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. You want to make certain your chimney is drawing properly and pulling carbon monoxide gases up the chimney and out. This is critical because we can’t see or smell carbon monoxide fumes. There’s a combustion process which takes place in our fireplaces and wood burning stoves, and when we burn wood as fuel, a byproduct of carbon monoxide is created.

· Avoiding Chimney Fires. Having your fireplace swept and maintained regularly will decrease the risk of a chimney fire, by eliminating blockages that can catch fire, such as bird and animal nests and creosote buildup. Creosote is a black or brown, tar-like substance which is extremely combustible. It can build up on the inside of your chimney, and once an ample amount of creosote accumulates , it can ignite and start a chimney fire.

Cost: The national average cost for a chimney inspection and sweeping is $150.00 however, many chimney sweeping companies offer specials during the warmer months.
And how often should you clean your chimney? According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, the National Fire Protection Association Standard is that “chimneys, fireplaces and vents shall be inspected once per year, and cleaning, maintenance and repairs shall be done if necessary.” Additionally, “open masonry fireplaces should be swept at 1/8″ sooty buildup, and sooner if there is any glaze present.”  So the recommended frequency of chimney sweeping will vary, depending upon how often you use your fireplace.  It’s also a good idea to have your chimney maintained for structural issues, such as tuck pointing missing or deteriorating mortar.  This will complement your home’s appearance.

Have your chimney swept now, and you’ll will enjoy many wonderful roaring fires in your fireplace this season!
