January 12, 2015  How to Fix a Squeaking Wood Drawer

Have a squeaking wood drawer that is driving you nuts? If it is an older, wood-on-wood drawer, chances are the changes in humidity in the room over time have caused the wood to expand and contract repeatedly, creating a loosening of the structure. If you keep forcing the drawer, you can damage it even more, so it’s best to fix it.

Fortunately, the fix for a squeaking wood-on-wood drawer is simple enough. Just apply wax to the areas where the wood touches wood, and your drawer should be sliding freely again in no time.

Pretty much any type of wax will do the job. If you have any of the items below lying around the house, give one of them a try, and you may not even need to buy anything to fix the drawer:

  • Ordinary beeswax (such as in a candle)
  • Wax Paper (folded over several times into a packet)
  • Carnuba Wax (such as car wax)
  • Crayons (try just coloring in the areas where friction has occurred)

In a pinch, you can even try using a bar of hard soap. Just keep in mind that the scent will linger, so be sure to use one with a fragrance that you like.
