November 11, 2015 How to Rewire That Heirloom Lamp

It’s an exquisite lamp! You have never seen another one like it and if you had, it would probably be on display at the Smithsonian.  The style and color are ideal, and you know exactly where you’ll place it. It is a flea market treasure, a yard sale gem or perhaps you discovered an heirloom lamp in Aunt Phoebe’s attic. The thing is, no matter where you unearthed your treasure, you just might want to re-wire that heirloom lamp before you plug it in.

Re-wiring an old lamp may seem challenging. However, it’s easier than you may think, and you’ll rest better at night knowing that your “real find” isn’t a real fire hazard.

You’ll need just a few tools to complete this task:

In addition, you’ll need to purchase a  lamp re-wiring kit, which is readily available at most home improvement and hardware stores, or through Amazon (see link below).  If you’re uncertain what to purchase, take the lamp to the store with you.  Most wiring kits cost around $12-15.

First, familiarize yourself with the components of the lamp.  There are just a few parts, however, you’ll have to remember the order in which you take them apart to disassemble the lamp.  Taking notes may also be helpful.  Be sure that the lamp is unplugged before you begin to work on it.
