3 Steps to Updating Your Kitchen Lighting.  Autumn is most definitely here, and as the days get shorter, the dark, chilly evenings get colder and longer.  Brighten up your kitchen space with beautiful lighting that will make preparing and eating dinner a pleasure for the whole family.  Here are some tips to warm up the most popular room in the house:

  1. Create Layers of Light.  For the best effect, avoid trying to light the whole room with one giant light, and instead, combine different types of light.  Think about including 3 types of lighting: general light for the large open areas, task lighting where you will be chopping, cutting and reading recipes, and ambient light, for instance, under-cabinet lighting.  The layering technique can make even a small kitchen seem more warm, open and inviting.

  1. Combine Different Types of Fixtures. To create visual interest in your kitchen, combine different types of  fixtures.  Pendants work very nicely over a kitchen table or in a row over an island or bar.  Flush-mount and track lighting are popular general purpose lights that can be used both as task-lighting or as general lighting.  We have even seen instances where people use inexpensive stick-on lights to illuminate dark cabinets in the corner of the room.  There are so many simple and easy-to install lighting options today.
  2. Consider Adding Accent Lighting.  This could be as simple as installing lights inside an open cabinet to highlight a beautiful set of china, putting a spotlight on a piece of art on the wall, or highlighting a shelf lined with your collection of rare cookbooks.  The options for accent lighting are endless, and add a final touch to your kitchen lighting to showcase your personality!

The great thing is that none of this has to be complex or difficult.  Start with one layer that works for you, such as a pendant light over your kitchen table, and build as you can.  This might not be the year that you can undertake a big kitchen remodel, so make the kitchen you have more enjoyable with lovely lighting!
