July 31, 2015  Friday Find: Consol Solar Jar

consul solar jar 2

The Consol Solar Jar is truly awesome…a hand-crafted, sustainable, durable, waterproof and portable source of solar light that has so many potential uses!

This light was developed in South Africa by Harald Schulz to bring safe lighting (an alternative to kerosene lighting) to people who live in areas without electricity.  The jars are handmade right in South Africa, and the company provides training and living wages to its workers, who were formerly unemployed.

How It Works

The Consol Solar Jar is a mason jar that contains four solar-powered LED lights and solar cells in the lid.  You charge the batteries by placing the jar in direct sunlight.  You get approximately 1 hour of light for every hour that the jar sits in the sun.

The jar gives a light that is bright enough for reading, yet is soft enough to provide atmosphere. You can personalize and decorate your jar by placing pebbles, sand, shells, dried flowers, and so on in the jar.

The jars are ideal for both indoor and outdoor lighting.  You can place them on a table or hang them by the handle.  Use them for garden accent lighting, patio lighting, camping trips, and table decoration.

Enjoy having a light that is beautiful, sustainable, and functional.  It also makes a great housewarming or hostess gift.
