Top 10 Household Uses for Duct Tape.  Duct tape is the classic fix-all, do-all tape, and it now even comes in just about every color and pattern under the sun.  Originally called “duck tape” when it was developed as a product for the U.S. military during World War II, duct tape has a myriad of uses, from repairing clothing, to creating art, to serving as a cure for warts!  Here we focus on the 10 best uses for duct tape around your house, yard and car:

  1. Tape Down Outdoor Furniture:  Use duct tape to secure your outdoor furniture to your deck or patio before that next big windstorm.  Pick a cool color or pattern that coordinates with your outdoor furniture, and it will look smart!
  2. Remove Pet Hair from Car Upholstery:  Does your dog love to go for a ride in the car?  A quick and easy solution to removing the pet hair from your car seats is to use duct tape.  Believe it or not, duct tape will remove even stubborn pet hair that a vacuum cannot pick up.
  3. Taping Up Windows:  Duct tape is the perfect solution to all your window issues.  Use it to weatherproof around the edges of windows.  If you live in hurricane or tornado territory, put a big X with duct tape across your windows when you receive word that a storm is coming.  Lastly, if you do have a broken window that you need to remove from the frame, tape it with duct tape first. This is a good safety precaution to take to keep all the small pieces of glass together.
  4. Hang on to Those Tools:  If some of your tools have slippery handles, wrap duct tape around them to secure your grip and use the tool safely!
  5. Make a Temporary Roof Shingle.  To temporarily replace a bad or broken roof shingle, cut a piece of plywood to the same size as a shingle.  Wrap it in duct tape and push it into place.  This will prevent leakage until you are able to permanently replace the shingle.
  6. Repair Trash Cans:  No need to toss a cracked trash can or bin.  Just tape up the crack with duct tape, inside and out, and it will be (almost) as good as new!
  7. Clean Cobwebs:  Have a lot of cobwebs and dust in hard-to-reach corners of your ceilings that you are tired of looking at, and can’t easily reach?  Get a stick or pole, and wrap a bunch of duct tape around the end, sticky side out.  Then you have the perfect tool to remove those cobwebs in minutes!
  8. The Ultimate Quick Patch:  Duct tape makes a great patch for just about anything…except for hvac ducts, ironically (which require specialty patching material).  Use duct tape to patch up a ripped vacuum cleaner hose, a dryer lint vent, a tent, a tarp, ripped hoses in your car (just temporarily) or even patch your jeans, in a pinch!
  9. Organize Electric and Electronics Cords:  Use duct tape to secure your electric and electronics cords around your TV or computer.  You can also tape it around any shutterstock_151899995exposed wire.
  10. Don’t Lose Your Batteries:  Why is it that everyone always loses the cover to the battery box in the TV remote?  Keep those batteries securely in place with duct tape!  This also works for any electronics device for which you may have lost the battery cover.
