DIY Tool Tip: Copper Pipe Cutter

Copper pipe cutters, also called “copper tubing cutters” or sometimes just “pipe cutters”, are a tool used to cut copper plumbing pipes. There are different types of copper pipe cutters.  They are used by plumbers and also by anyone who wants to repair or replace their own plumbing pipes.  While you can also cut pipe with a hacksaw, a tubing cutter is generally “a faster, cleaner, and more convenient way of cutting pipe than using a hacksaw...”1

There are two styles of copper pipe cutters, but for our purposes we will talk about the type that has a sharp wheel and adjustable grips.  The way it works is this: You attach it to the pipe so that the pipe is resting in the gap/grip.  Then, you rotate the tool around the pipe, while repeatedly tightening the wheel.  Eventually, it cuts all the way through the pipe.

The way the copper pipe cutter is designed is also handy because it allows you to cut pipe in tight spaces where it might be difficult to maneuver a larger tool or one which has a long handle.

These tools are inexpensive (generally around $10 to $15).  They come in different sizes for different sizes of pipe.  If you plan on working on your own home plumbing at all, they are an excellent addition to your toolbox!
