The Best Colors for Your Bedroom

Everyone knows that the kitchen is usually the activity hub of one’s home.  On the other side of things, the bedroom should be the relaxation center of your home.  Your bedroom should be the place to rest and renew your energy. There is a lot of advice on the internet about making your bedroom more peaceful, relaxing and conducive to romance.  But maybe you can’t resist watching late-night TV in bed, or perhaps the fact that you have small children down the hall prevents you from keeping your bedroom door fully closed at night.  Maybe your bedroom is too small, too hot, too cold, or too “lived-in” to be the perfect retreat that you might wish for.

Well, the good news is that you can take a big step towards creating a more Zen-like, warm and romantic atmosphere with one simple adjustment:  color.  The right bedroom colors for you will depend upon your personal preference, of course. In general, though, earth tones are always a good bet for the bedroom.  Here are some ideas:

Earth-y shades of green:  Consider olive, sage, forest, and even touches of lime might be appropriate in small doses

Shades of blue found in nature: Aqua and sky-blue are two that will work particularly well in bedrooms

Browns and tans:  Classically relaxed and neutral, every shade from sand to chocolate promotes a natural, relaxing feeling in a bedroom

Off-whites:  Off-whites tend to work better than bright whites in a bedroom

As for walls, Feng Shui guidelines indicate that bedroom walls of a skin color, anywhere between light beige and deep chocolate brown, are preferable.  Think about what colors make you feel the most relaxed and at peace.  Remember that colors are always darker and brighter on the walls than on the paint swatches that you look at in stores, so it might not hurt to try out a couple of sample colors and actually paint a section of a wall to look at the color before you commit to it for your whole room. Some paint stores even sell an extra large sample swatch for a nominal price, which you can hold up to the wall to see how the color will look, without any muss or fuss.

Color is a generally easy change to make in a room.  To make things even easier for you, we share some of our painting secrets in the following how-to videos,  “Painting Tip: How to Cut In” and How to Use a Paint Grid.   These two tips will literally cut your painting time in half!

Use color to transform your bedroom into a relaxed haven from your busy life!
